- The plant was found by Gert Neuhuber in the province of San Luis, to the North of Villa de Praga, at the height of 890 m.a.s.l. in 1988 (GN 88-94). No one has found any of these plants in that locality since then. Gert named the newly discovered amazing Gymno in honor of Natalya Schelkunova, Moscow. In Russian collections, the genuine Gymnocalyciums nataliae have been very rare until recently. In fact, all of the few plants were raised from the seeds labeled with the field number GN 94 which had been brought in by Neuhuber. I found a couple of such seedlings (graftings) in the collection of Nikolay Fediukin after his death, the third one which was growing on its own roots was found by someone else… Now, these plants are mine, they bloom and produce seeds, giving life to new generations of them. Another batch of seedlings has been raised from the seeds which were sent to me by Gert Neuhuber who had got them from the plants descending from his original find. They come under the number GN 99-94. We can also assert that there is another genuine G. nataliae, known by the field number VG 1063, which comes from San Isidro. After the publication of the description of G. nataliae in 2005, lots of various plants resembling the original species to some extent have been put on the market under that name, but they actually have nothing to do with real G. nataliae. To the best of my judgement, and according to the observations of the plants I own myself, only the plant with the field number LB 1408 can be considered as G. nataliae among them. For more details, you can refer to a great article by Tomáš Kulhánek in Schütziana, Gert Neuhuber’s article in Kaktus-Klub (Issue 2, 2005), and the respective Victor Gapon’s publication in the 1st volume of his “11 000 km around Argentina in Search of Cacti”.

Gymnocalycium nataliae
Конечно, появление этой колючки можно было бы списать на влияние подвоя, но вот, читая недавно во втором номере “Шютцианы” продолжение статьи Томаса Кулханека как раз о “натали”, я наткнулся на такую фразу: “The plants in populations of G. nataliae in the area of Liberador General San Martin are more variable in such characteristics as flowers, fruits and spines. One of such populations can be seen on the flat slopes of Pampa de San Martin, near Estancia La Noria, altitude 960 msm (fig. 31-41). (…) In this population variability in the colour of the receptacle from olive green to very dark plum blue have been studied. The colour of the spines varies from light-rose to dark blood red and variability also can be seen in the length of spines and their arrangement. Sometimes with the occurrence of one central spine.”

- Central spines in Gymnocalycium nataliae
I got these seedlings of G. nataliae GN 94 from the former collection of Nikolay Fediukin. They are original Gert Neuhuber’s seedlings. When Nikolay had shown them to me some time before, he wondered about the central spines on one of the seedlings and planned to ask Gert of that anomaly (the description of G. nataliae contains no mentioning of central spines). Of course, the emergence of cental spines can be an effect of grafting, but, while reading the second part of Tomáš Kulhánek‘s article dedicated to G. berchtii species-group and G. natalie in particular (Schütziana 2 (2011) 2), I was suddenly surprised to come across the following statement: “The plants in populations of G. nataliae in the area of Liberador General San Martin are more variable in such characteristics as flowers, fruits and spines.
So, central spines can be found in some plants growing in Pampa de San Martin, near Estancia La Noria. Perhaps, some plants in Villa de Praga locality used to have central spines, too?
